Up Front with Samsarah’s Front Desk
You may choose a salon because of a favorite stylist, or visit a spa because of a talented therapist. However, the people responsible for your experience, from beginning to end are those working the front desk. From the appointment you make over the phone, to the welcome as you arrive, to the finishing details as you leave – the receptionists are working to ensure your experience is smooth and enjoyable.

The Samsarah receptionists are not only the faces out front of the salon, they are the women working their hearts out behind the scenes to help the stylists and therapists bring our clients the best experience during their appointments.

Besides the above mentioned duties, our receptionists are a great source of information about the products available at Samsarah. Chat them up the next time you’re here, you’ll learn a lot! Here are some of their favorites:

Before she put her hair into Samsarah’s hands, KAY didn’t believe she could grow her hair for longer and softer styles. If you feel like you’re stuck in that in-between stage, take a tip from Kay. Try Pureology Nano Luxury line shampoo and conditioner. “These products definitely breathed new life into my hair. It’s never been healthier or shinier or as easy to style. It’s given me more options to try new hair styles. I love it!”

Kay’s favorite winter weather fix is
Redken’s Real Control – a twice a week mask – to combat dry, brittle winter hair. “I love how it makes my hair feel.”

SHEILA’S colored and highlighted hair requires the right shampoo – for her, it’s Redken Color Extend. It helps her get the most mileage out each color and highlight.

Sheila loves Glass by Redken. “Ever feel like your hair has lost some of its luster between salon visits? You women over 40 know what I mean! Glass (and Vinyl Glam) should be your new best friends.” Sheila applies Glass before blow-drying and then finishes her style with a touch more to make her highlights shimmer and look fresh.

RITA considers Kenra Thermal Spray a must – “I style with a curling iron and it brings staying power to my style.” She recently discovered Iron Repair. “It’s great protection against curling iron damage. No more dry or brittle hair!”

Other staples for Rita include All Soft Shampoo and Conditioner and W8less Plus hairspray. “It performs without feeling heavy. Just like the name – WEIGHTLESS.”

Thanks ladies! We’d be lost without you!

Put Some BANG! in Your Style…

Your hairstyle, that is! Bangs are big this season and this trend is showing no sign of slowing down. If you’re considering the look, use these celebrities as inspiration: Tyra Banks said that getting bangs was one of the best things she did last year! And as the new face of Chanel’s Coco Mademoiselle perfume, Keira Knightley looks the epitome of French chic.

Need more reasons? Charla Krupp, author of best-selling book, HOW NOT TO LOOK OLD, lists bangs as number two on her list of things to do to look 10 years younger, 10 pounds lighter and 10 times better. Here’s what she says.

“Chris Cusano, a stylist at Elizabeth Arden NYC, confirms that once you reach a certain age, you look better with bangs.

ABOVE: Celebrity bangs. Top Row: Tyra Banks, Keira Knightley, Reese Witherspoon. Bottom Row: Katie Holmes, Heidi Klum, Seinna Miller

Almost everybody does. Bangs are a cheap and easy way to chic up your look. They also accentuate the positive and camouflage the negative. This haircut cure-all hides a large forehead, a wrinkled forehead, or a receding hairline. At the same time, a soft fringe of hair falling along the side of your face draws attention up to your eyes (where you have spark!) and deflects scrutiny away from your jaw (which may be a little slack or saggy).”

According to Krupp, nothing ages you like:
  • Too-short bangs
  • Too-long hair parted down the middle
  • Helmet head
  • High hair
  • A too tight or formal updo
  • Visibly thinning hair

Lashes – The Next Big Thing!

According to the November 2008 issue of Elle magazine, “Eyelashes are the new breasts...all of a sudden, every woman wants a bigger, fuller pair!” Although that may be a bit extreme, it is true that eyelashes are all the rage nowadays. According to recent news in Scientific American, the FDA has green lighted bimatoprost (a known hair growth stimulant) in the new eyelash treatment Latisse, which is scheduled to hit physicians’ offices in early 2009. Latisse will cost $120 for a one-month, once-per-day supply, and sales are forecasted to be as high as $30 million in 2009, growing to $310 million in 2012.

So, not interested in a $120 a month lash habit? No patience for applying false eyelashes? NO PROBLEM! Try Mirabella’s LIMITLESS LASHES.

WE LOVE THIS PRODUCT! It perfectly prepares the lashes for exceptional volume and length. Apply 2 coats, comb out each coat, let dry, then apply mascara. And, WOW, it’s like having false eyelashes in a bottle! What’s great is that this super-creamy formula even conditions lashes with vitamin E and Keratin. It’s a new salon favorite!

Heading South on Vacation?
Remember to Pack Great Skin

Planning a winter get-away to a warm place? Look and feel your best by taking care of your skin before you leave. Here’s how:

Prepare Your Skin

The outfit that makes you look your best is GREAT SKIN. Prepare yours with a clarifying and hydrating Facial. Exfoliate away the effects of winter before you head out. Your skin will look radiant and be better prepared to deal with sun and warm breezes. You’ll feel great, too!

Have you checked out your back lately? Make sure it is beach-ready with a Clarifying Back Treatment to reduce blemishes. Your back will be deep cleaned, exfoliated and then treated to a 20 minute massage.

Toss the Razor…

Feel completely smooth and confident by preparing for your vacation with a bikini, Brazilian, leg, or back wax. Waxing takes some advance planning so start now. If you’ve never tried waxing before, we recommend coming in about 5 weeks before your vacation and then again just before you leave.

Proper outgrowth ensures the best waxing experience. Hair must be at least 1/4” long for successful waxing. Hair longer than

1/2” long is more painful and difficult to remove with accuracy. Hair longer than 1/2” will need to be trimmed.

You may wish to take an ibuprofen or other pain reliever one half hour before your appointment to reduce pain.

Further prepare your skin by keeping it properly moisturized in advance of your appointment. Dry, flaky skin prevents the wax from gripping. However, do not apply moisturizer the day of your waxing appointment – it interferes with adhesion.

Safe Tanning

No one wants to bring Wisconsin winter white skin to a beach vacation! But, tanning booths are a no-no for healthy skin. Instead, choose the safe alternative of sunless tanner – you’ll save money and time, too! To get your skin in the proper condition for the perfect application of sunless tanner, come in for a full body organic sugar scrub. Removing dead skin cell build-up and rough patches helps tanning products perform evenly. Selfless tanners work best when skin is properly hydrated. A sugar scrub leaves your skin silky smooth because it’s packed with vitamin E and lavender. If you like, we can even apply your favorite tanner for you right after your treatment. It will get you started and get all those hard-to-reach spots! For an Organic Sugar

Sun Protection

Now that you have your tan in place, you’ll need to protect your skin while you’re in the sun. Don’t lose any precious vacation time to a sunburn. Ann has studied independent research on safe and effective sunscreens and is happy to make recommendations. Just call!

For faces, Ann loves Bioelements SPF 15 Sun Diffusing Protector. It has full spectrum protection – meaning it protects against burning AND aging rays. It feels light, does not clog pores and performs beautifully. “I used it on a week-long sailing vacation in the Virgin Islands last year and everyone was borrowing it – even the guys!” It’s something everyone should be using everyday to protect against sun damage since the aging effects of UVA rays are present all the time, in any weather, and are not filtered out by windows or glass.

The Benefits of Massage

  • Increases circulation, allowing the body to pump more oxygen and nutrients into tissues and vital organs.
  • Stimulates the flow of lymph, the body’s natural defense system, against toxic invaders.
  • Relaxes and softens injured and overused muscles.
  • Reduces spasms and cramping.
  • Increases joint flexibility.
  • Reduces recovery time and helps prepare the body for strenuous workouts, reducing subsequent muscle pain.
  • Releases endorphins – the body’s natural painkiller – and is proving very beneficial in patients with chronic illness, injury, and post-op pain.
  • Reduces post-surgery adhesions and edema and can be used to reduce and realign scar tissue after healing has occurred.
  • Improves range-of-motion and decreases discomfort for patients with low back pain.
  • Relieves pain for migraine sufferers and decreases the need for medication.
  • Provides exercise and stretching for atrophied muscles and reduces shortening of the muscles for those with restricted range of motion.
The benefits of massage are diverse. No matter how great it feels, massage isn’t just a luxury, it’s a health necessity.

A great way to add regular massage to your wellness program is with a Samsarah massage package. You save 20% when you buy 6 massages.

KELLIE and ANN, Massage Therapists

Regular massage not only feels good, but it can cure what ails you.

As you lie on the table under crisp, fresh sheets, hushed music draws you into the moment. You hear the gentle sound of massage oil being warmed in your therapist’s hands. Once the session gets underway, the daily stressors and aching muscles fade into an oblivious 60 minutes of relief.

But what if that hour of massage did more for you than just take the pressures of the day away? What if that gentle, Swedish massage helped you combat cancer? What if bodywork helped you recover from a strained hamstring in half the time? What if your sleep, digestion, and mood all improved with massage and bodywork? What if these weren’t just “what if’s”?

Evidence is showing that the more massage you can allow yourself, the better you’ll feel. Here’s why:

Massage as a healing tool has been around for thousands of years. Touching is a natural human reaction to pain and stress, and for conveying compassion and support. When you bump your head or have a sore calf, the natural response is to rub it to feel better.

We now have scientific proof of the benefits of massage – benefits ranging from treating chronic diseases and injuries to alleviating the growing tensions of our modern lifestyles. Having a massage does more than just relax your body and mind – there are specific physiological and psychological changes that occur, and even more so when

massage is utilized as a preventative, frequent therapy and not simply a mere luxury. Massage not only feels good, but it can cure what ails you.

The Fallout of Stress

Experts estimate that 80 to 90 percent of disease is stress-related. The physical changes massage brings to your body can have a positive effect in many areas of your life. Besides increasing relaxation and decreasing anxiety, massage lowers blood pressure, increases circulation, improves injury recovery, encourages deep sleep, and increases concentration. It reduces fatigue and gives you more energy to handle stressful situations. By producing a meditative state or heightened awareness of the present moment, massage can provide emotional and spiritual balance, bringing with it true relaxation and peace.

The incredible benefits of massage are doubly powerful if taken in regular “doses.” Researchers from the Touch Research Institute (TRI) at the University of Miami, found that recipients of massage can benefit even in small doses (15 minutes of chair massage or a half-hour table session). They also note that receiving bodywork two to three times a week is even more beneficial. While this may not be feasible, it’s nice to know that this “medicine” only gets better with frequency.

Beyond Relaxation

In an age of technical and, at times, impersonal medicine, massage offers a drug-free, noninvasive, and humanistic approach based on the body’s natural ability to heal itself. Following is a brief list of the many known, research-based benefits of massage and bodywork:
