Expert Care for Winter Hair
The Samsarah stylists recently attended the Midwest Premiere Event in Lake Geneva. They learned new techniques in coloring and cutting and also got the scoop on the latest trends for hair.
According to JR, styles are becoming more classic this winter so bobs and fringes (whether short or full) will be popular among fashion-forward women. “To update your look for the winter season blondes should add ribbons of medium to dark brown color, while brunettes can enrich their colour by adding pieces of deep mahogany or rich velvet browns.”
Care for Winter Hair
Chilly weather is on its way. Along with cold air on the outside comes dry indoor heat. Both of these happen to be two of the top enemies of luscious looking hair. Here are some tips from JR so you won’t have to hide your hair under a wooly hat this winter!
Fly away hair can be tamed with a simple touch of leave-in conditioner. Leave-in conditioners neutralize static charges and zaps them before they even have time to make an appearance. Simply spray the product on clean hair and comb through with even strokes. Remember to towel dry your hair for the best results. Here are some of JR’s favorites.

Pureology Instant Repair Leave-In Conditioner provides nourishing benefits and repairs damage to dry, color treated hair. This concentrated leave-in treatment makes even the most damaged hair, shiny and healthy and it offers color protection.
It has a clear, lightweight liquid formula that leaves hair stronger, smoother and more manageable.
Redken Extreme Anti-Snap is a leave-in treatment that gently smoothes the cuticle and helps fortify hair that’s prone to breaking, splitting or snapping off.
Extreme Iron Repair. Samsarah recently added this product to its line-up and the stylists are loving it. Extreme Iron Repair helps reinforce and restructure distressed, dull hair. This lotion is lightweight and easy to use. It conditions hair and restores shine. And, as its name implies, it protects hair from heat-styling damage while strengthening your hair from the inside and the outside. If you regularly use a flat-iron or curling iron on your hair, you need this!
Ask your stylist which product is best for your hair. |

How to Talk to Your Stylist
To get the hairstyle you really want, proper communication is the key. Here are some tips that will help you and your stylist work together most effectively.
Bring Photos
Bring photos of the style you have in mind. Use photos to show your preferences for cuts, styles or color.
Be Open to Advice
Your stylist knows what will work on your hair. Your hair texture, skin color, face shape and your committment to home care are all important factors to consider.
Point it Out
Your stylist isn’t a psychic. If you prefer longer bangs or you have trouble taming a cowlick, let your stylist know and be specific.
Talk about Healthy Hair
Make sure that both you and your stylist are talking about the health of your hair and what products will help your specific hair type.
Show before Cutting
Ask the stylist to show you with his or her fingers just how much is being cut off.
Clear up the Confusion
If you’re unsure what your stylist is talking about, ask her to explain in terms that you can understand.
Ask about Maintenance
Ask your stylist to show you how to maintain your new look. Have her show you how to blow-dry it and find out what products you will need for the upkeep.
Speak Up
If your stylist does something you don’t like, speak up. If you like what your stylist has done, let them know.
Keep in Mind
It’s up to you to maintain your new hairstyle once you leave the salon. Choose a style that matches the time and effort you are willing to take to achieve the look.

Winter can be tough on skin. This is especially true in Wisconsin where winters come with extremely cold temperatures outside, and dry, over-heated air inside. The skin’s primary role, to protect the body, is put to the test in these conditions. Your epidermis must weather these drastic fluctuations in temperature, and often the result is chapped, scaly, flaky skin. With a little extra attention and some adjustments in the products you use, there’s a lot you can do to combat winter skin.
The biggest wintertime concern is dehydration. In colder climates, you definitely need to increase the protection for your skin to provide a stronger barrier against the environment. Just as you change your wardrobe to meet the demands of the season, you must shift to winter-weight products for your skin.
Facing Winter
To keep facial skin hydrated
in winter you
must over-
treat your
skin. You may
need to
switch to a
cream-based
cleanser and
thicker
moisturizer.
Products with
hyaluronic
acid, a natural
moisture-
binding
component are a great way to boost the effectiveness of your moisturizer.
If you spend time outdoors for activities such as skiing, snowshoeing, or walking you will need heavy-duty protection. |
|
|
|
Bundle up with comfortable scarf and don’t skip the sunscreen! Damaging rays are present all year and snow reflects sun intensifying its effects. SPF15 is recommended.
Don’t forget lips and eyes. These areas are especially vulnerable to the effects of winter and need a continual shield against the elements.
In the cold, you lose blood flow to the skin, resulting in dry, dull tone. Winter is a great time to take in professional facial treatments to increase circulation and rejuvenate a healthy glow. A facial massage and deep hydrating treatments are just the ticket. But be careful with peels and resurfacing treatments during the winter, as they can do more damage than good with skin that is already stressed. These treatments are most effective when skin has been properly hydrated.
You may notice that skin is more sensitive during the winter months. If the protective barrier

to products,
or even infections. Product ingredients that may not normally be irritating are |
literally able to “get under your skin” and cause problems such as redness, itching and burning. The biggest culprits are artificial fragrance, artificial color, and preservatives. The Bioelements line of skin care products are free of all of these ingredients making them a great choice for sensitive skin. |

Winterizing the Body
It’s not just the face that suffers in the winter. Skin everywhere dries out, and gets that flaky look and uncomfortable winter itch.
To help avoid this, apply an emollient moisturizer immediately after drying off from a shower or bath when skin can most readily absorb the lotion and restore its barrier. Choose a thick and creamy product, such as body butter, geared toward extra dry skin.
A word about hot baths – even though they seem very appealing in the cold months they can further exacerbate dry skin. The solution? Add 10 drops of an aromatic essential oil to the bath to moisturize as you soak. (Lavender is particularly soothing to dry skin.)
If dryness is still bothersome, book a massage or full body sugar scrub and conditioning wrap. As well as being a relaxing treat, these services are great circulation boosters and the creams and oils used help re-moisturize the body. Samsarah also offers specialized treatments to target problem areas such as dry elbows and knees. |

Bioelements has several great products to combat winter skin. Creme Therapy mask is a comforting boost of moisture; Moisture Positive Cleanser is effective without drying; Sleepwear for eyes and Jet Travel both contain hyaluronic acid which helps skin accept and retain moisture.

Let’s Talk!
Communicating with Your Massage Therapist
by Sharron Leonard
People get massages for a variety of reasons. Perhaps you’re seeking stress relief from the weekly work commute or you’re wanting to cleanse your body of toxins. Or maybe massage is helping you recover from a sports injury or surgery. Whatever your reasons, it’s absolutely important that you explicitly communicate to your therapist the reason you made the appointment. Otherwise you run the risk of not getting what you want.
In addition to explaining any wellness requirement, you also need to clarify your comfort needs during the session so that you feel completely at ease. Most practitioners work to create an appropriate environment with elements such as the temperature, music, aromatherapy, and table setting. But if anything makes you uncomfortable, feel free– or rather, feel responsible – to say as much. Your therapist is as interested as you are in making sure you get what you want from the massage, and building a communicative partnership is key. Remember, communication is a two-way street.
The Body
“What is the focus of our session today?” A good therapist asks this question whether it’s the client’s first or 21st appointment with her. The therapist needs to know your wellness context. Even if she has your health history, circumstances – and bodies – are always changing. Perhaps you were traveling for the last two months spending significant time in cramped seats on airplanes. Maybe you’re training for a marathon race, logging numerous miles each week. Or, a more likely scenario, you’re stressed and feeling emotionally tapped.
Furthermore, it’s important she or he knows about your massage preferences that just make your massage more pleasurable, such as getting extra work on your feet or ending the session with a face massage.
The Setting
Massage therapists design their treatment rooms to offer the basic comforts. But they need the client to speak up if something is

not to her liking. Especially important is massage-table comfort. Even if your therapist doesn’t specifically ask about the temperature, background sounds, aromas or other subtle amenities in the room, if there’s something that’s making your massage less than great, be sure to discuss it with your practitioner.
The Conversation
Conversation can sometimes be a point of contention. Because some clients like to talk during a session while others prefer silence. It’s up to the client to dictate this aspect. A massage therapist won’t usually initiate conversation if the client is silent. If you want to tactfully make certain your therapist is not overly conversational, it is appropriate to say something like, “You will find that I am not very talkative. I just like to totally relax during this time.”
While your practitioner may communicate aspects of the massage, don’t necessarily take this for her trying to make conversation. It’s very important for the therapist to explain her actions so the client is not surprised. For example, a therapist might try to ease a first-time massage client’s apprehension by explaining “I will only be uncovering one part of the body at a time” or “I’m doing a rehabilitation treatment for injury.” In general, the client wants detailed information on what is going to happen.
Feedback from the client is equally important. Is the stroke too deep or too light? Do you want a slower or faster pace? If you are unclear about an expectation or a procedure, even if it is something as simple as, “Where is the safest place to put my jewelry?” feel free to ask.

Massage client Andrea Scott explains her frustration with one massage session where she wishes she’d been more vocal. “I like deep tissue massage, and the practitioner was giving me a very light Swedish massage,” she says. “I just didn’t feel like I was getting anything out of it and found myself looking forward to the session just being over. For some reason, I thought it would be rude to say anything, but in retrospect, I’m sure the therapist would’ve appreciated it.” Instead, notes Scott, she left disappointed and the massage therapist never had a chance to address the issue.
Your goal as the client is to get what you are specifically seeking in each session. Your practitioner wants the experience to meet your expectations and will appreciate you verbalizing your wellness requirements and personal comfort needs. Your massage therapist is your partner for healthy living, but you need to speak up!
